Draft 2018 to 2022 implementation plan
The initial draft 2018 to 2022 Wild Salmon Policy Implementation Plan – for Consultation (“the draft plan”) includes an overview of WSP strategies, highlights of progress to date, and challenges and lessons learned and sets out wild salmon-related activities under the themes of Assessment Work and Integrated Planning and Program Delivery. These are activities that will be undertaken from 2018 to 2022 to support the goal and objectives of the WSP and build on best practices and lessons learned over the last 12 years. The draft plan also reflects some of the many contributions of Indigenous peoples, communities, stewardship groups and other organizations dedicated to salmon and salmon habitat conservation across BC and Yukon.
The two key themes (Assessment Work and Integrated Planning and Program Delivery) link to six strategies in the WSP, but are organized under the two themes to reflect the integrative nature of the work. For example, the Assessment Work theme reflects scientific activities related to monitoring and assessing the biological status of salmon, their habitats, and ecosystems (Strategies 1, 2, and 3 of the WSP). This supports the interconnections between CU assessment and increasing knowledge of habitat and ecosystem status. The Integrated Planning and Program Delivery theme incorporates this knowledge into integrated strategic planning and annual program delivery activities to address productivity and status of salmon populations (Strategies 4 and 5). The draft plan also includes a Performance Review and Evaluation section outlining DFO’s commitment to annual performance review (Strategy 6).
While the salmon life cycle spans multiple biological scales (from small stream to ocean to small stream), the draft plan is focused on assessment and management activities. It captures work being done at the regional (Pacific) and sub-regional (area) scale, which includes Yukon Transboundary, Fraser Interior, South Coast and North Coast. This is not to suggest that good work is not also happening at the individual CU level.
