Wild Salmon Policy Yukon Conservation Unit Consultations

Canada's Policy for Conservation of Wild Pacific Salmon represents Fisheries and Oceans Canada's commitment to maintain healthy and diverse populations of salmon that will support sustainable fisheries now, and meet the needs of future generations. The Wild Salmon Policy places conservation of salmon and their habitat as the first priority for resource management and encourages people throughout British Columbia and the Yukon to contribute to decisions about salmon conservation that reflect societal values. Updates, consultations and discussions about the implementation of the Wild Salmon Policy are ongoing.

The Wild Salmon Policy requires a systematic process to organize all Pacific salmon streams and lakes into geographic units for conservation and specification of the means to monitor abundance and distribution of Pacific salmon within those units over time. In collaboration with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada developed a scientific approach to determine salmon conservation units. Conservation units for British Columbia have been identified and finalized in collaboration with First Nations, the Province of BC, other partners and stakeholders. Proposed conservation units for the Yukon have also been identified (see below).
