Perch Fishery - Pacific Region

The perch fishery targets three species, pile perch, shiner perch, and surf perch (Embiotocidae). The fishery takes place near-shore and is conducted by drag seine or hook and line. Drag seine or hook and line is used to harvest perch and a category "Z-L" licence is required to harvest it. Fishers should note that consideration is being given to restricting seine gear to a maximum length of 90 m and a minimum mesh size of 19 mm in 2000.

Landings are generally small and intermittent. The majority of landings are made live and the fish are sold fresh in markets in the Lower Mainland. Small quantities of perch are sold for bait. The fishery is generally used as a fill-in during downtimes in other major fisheries.
