Fisher Identification Number

A Fisher Identification Number (FIN) is assigned to all holders of commercial licences and/or Fisher Registration cards, and vessel owners. It allows us to quickly and accurately identify fishers in the field while minimizing requirements to make repeated collections of sensitive personal fisher information.

The FIN number is used to securely document every commercial fisher’s legal name, date of birth, address, and gender. Used in combination with the fisher’s name, the FIN provides a highly accurate means to positively identify fishers for hail, Dockside Monitoring Program (DMP), offloading, enforcement, data collection, and other activities.

Your FIN is printed on your Fisher Registration Card (FRC) and both party and vessel based licences next to your name. Licence holders may be asked to provide their FIN when applying for a licence, or for dockside monitoring, or for enforcement purposes as indicated in the Integrated Fishery Management Plan (IFMP) for your fishery or in the licence conditions attached to your licence. You will need to provide your FIN along with your name when interacting with both Fisheries and Oceans Canada as well as third-party providers of contacted hail, catch monitoring services, and other related providers.
