Commercial vessel registration information
For new commercial vessels
Vessels not previously registered with DFO, please submit the following:
- A completed Application for Commercial Vessel Registration form and vessel registration fee
- The current vessel registration fee can be found on the licensing webpage under the header, Licence renewal fees
- Proof of ownership:
- For vessels registered under the Canada Shipping Act: a copy of the Certificate of Registry, or registered Bill of Sale
- For vessels licenced under the Canada Shipping Act: a copy of the Bill of Sale and Transport Canada Licence Certificate
- A vessel measurement marine survey report dated after May 1, 1989 that has been conducted by a Marine Surveyor in accordance with Fisheries and Oceans Canada current Vessel Measurement Guidelines
For previously registered commercial vessels
Vessels previously registered with DFO that have been unlicenced for more than 15 days must submit the following:
- A completed application. If a new registration number does not have to be issued or there are no vessel data changes, the vessel registration fee is not required.
- A marine survey report dated after May 01, 1989 that has been conducted by a Marine Surveyor in accor dance with Fisheries and Oceans Canada current Vessel Measurement Guidelines must be on our records or submitted with this application.
For previously registered commercial vessels reporting data changes
Vessels registered and licensed with DFO that have a change of vessel name, DOT number or vessel dimensions to be recorded, or a change in commercial activity from fishing to transporting or transporting to fishing must submit:
- A completed vessel registration application and payment of the vessel regist ration fee
- For changes in vessel name and data (other than overall length and breadth) for vessels registered with Transport Canada: a copy of the amended Certificate of Registry
- For changes in DOT # for vessels licenced or registered with Transport Canada: a Transport Canada Licence Certificate, or Certificate of Registry, or both may be required
Changes to Overall length of a previously registered vessel will only be considered where a marine survey has been reviewed and accepted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and changes have been done in accordance with policies.
