Shellfish Information 

Shellfish refers to aquatic invertebrate (without a backbone) animals. Shellfish such as crabs, clams and sea urchins have a hard outer shell, however some Photo: Sea Scallopspecies such as squid, sea cucumbers, and octopus the shells are hidden or absent.

Bivalve molluscs
are shellfish with two shells, such
as clams, oysters, scallops and cockles.

A Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence is required to fish for shellfish.

Some areas are closed for the harvest of some species of shellfish due to conservation or human health reasons.

Immediately prior to harvesting, check for shellfish closures with the nearest DFO office, or by calling 604-666-2828, or visit the sewage and dioxin contamination closures page for PSP and other shellfish closures.

Some gear restrictions apply when fishing for certain species of shellfish. Anglers are responsible for knowing and following those restrictions.
