Geochemistry of the Sea Surface Microlayer and Its Influence on Air-Sea Gas Exchange

As part of the Canadian SOLAS program, we're developing methods to sample and characterize the sea surface microlayer, in cooperation with the Acoustic Oceanography group and the Regional Dioxin Lab at IOS. The goals of the project are two-pronged: determine how the organic content of the microlayer controls air-sea gas exchange; and to understand what role the microlayer plays in the transport and dispersion of anthropogenic contaminants. The first step towards these ends is to effectively sample the sea surface microlayer, and the post-doc in our group, Magnus Eek, has designed and had built a remarkable sampler which has even been deployed successfully in the open ocean.
