Herring Spawning Dates in Six Regions

Previous page

Spawning dates shown on six regional graphs, represent herring spawns of variable magnitude. Scroll through a list of statistical tables to examine mean spawning dates weighted by the abundance of spawners at each spawn location. Graphs of British Columbia spawning dates are also partitioned by 101 herring sections. Select a region and then a section number on a region map.

Herring Age Compositions

Age compositions derived from seine-captured samples collected during the 1971-72 to the 2015-16 fishing seasons were assembled into five, time-series videos. Waves of strong year-classes (e.g., those born in 1977) can be tracked over time in each region. Most herring recruit at age 2+ or 3 years of age and are often referred to as first-time spawners. Juvenile herring (age 0+ and 1+ years) are usually not represented in these bio-samples due to gear selectivity and/or absence in the sampling areas during the season or time of sets (see CSAS 2003/107 for analyses of juvenile surveys).
