The Tla-o-qui-aht Project is owned by the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. It is located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island near Tofino, and was initiated in 1984 to address enhancement of severely depleted Kennedy River Chinook. This small remote hatchery uses moist incubators, in-stream cassettes and net pens to produce Chinook fry. Strengths of this project include: enhancement of Kennedy River Chinook, involvement in watershed planning, local employment and training, salmon provided to band members, and increased public education through outreach and tour groups.
