Conuma River Salmon Enhancement Facility -
Local Area Information

Public Groups:
The Conuma Enhancement Facility supports various public groups:
- Conuma coho eggs and classroom instruction are given for
classroom incubation projects in Gold River and Tahsis. Students
from Gold River and Tahsis schools also visit annually for
hands-on experience at the facility.
- Technical advice to Tahsis Enhancement
Society for seapen rearing of Tahsis and Leiner chinook
- Tlupana and Sucwoa chinook eggs taken and juveniles seapen
reared in co-operation with the Gold River Rod & Gun Club,
Critter Cove Marina, Hoiss Point Lodge, Nootka Wilderness Lodge,
Gold River & Tahsis Streamkeepers and Western Forest Products.
- Works in collaboration with the
Nootka Sound Watershed Society (NSWS), a group made up of local
First Nations, Representation for local sport and commercial
fisheries, local stewards, Streamkeepers, and sport fishing lodges.
The NSWS and Fisheries and Oceans have recently struck a
collaborative agreement to increase the seapen release of Conuma
Chinook by 1,000,000 smolts

Special Activites:
The Great Walk - 64 kilometer walk from Gold River to Tahsis, BC.
Normally held the first weekend in June. http://www.greatwalk.com/
Wildlife:
Elk, deer and bears are regularly seen in the local area and along
the Head Bay Forestry Road with the occasional sightings of cougars
and wolves.
