Bulletin - pacific salmon sea lice monitoring

RE: Pacific salmon sea lice monitoring explanation

During the recent review of the proposed marine finfish licence conditions, DFO received feedback from the marine finfish aquaculture industry requesting further explanation on the monitoring of sea lice associated with Pacific salmon. The current licence condition states in part “Starting July 1, 2016 the licence holder must ensure that sea lice monitoring is conducted quarterly, for the term set out in this licence, on cultivated Pacific salmon at the containment structure array.

The Department interprets this as the licence holder must ensure that sea lice monitoring is conducted on cultivated Pacific salmon at the facility at a minimum, quarterly, and is to occur during the handling of fish (live or dead), a harvest event or a fish sorting event. Approximations of sea lice abundance generated during routine obervations will not be accepted on their own but are encouraged to guide the active sea lice count during the activities described above.

This bulletin is our interpretation of the licence conditions based on current information. Please be advised that this bulletin is subject to revision at the Department’s discretion and will be sent to licence holders if and when updated.
