Molecular genetics

The Molecular Genetics (MG) Section studies the genetics of aquatic animals on the west coast of Canada. This work helps to protect these species and informs management decisions that may impact them.

Our scientists look at genetic differences within and between different populations of animals, to see how they relate to each other. To do this, they study the animal’s DNA, including short pieces that can act as markers (for instance microsatellites and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)). They also study genes in animals that can be turned on or off in different situations like when the animals are affected by changes in their environment (e.g. increased temperature due to climate change).

Our work is not limited to just wild animals. We also study fish raised in hatcheries and in aquaculture, as well as perform research related to understanding the risks associated with genetically modified fish.
