User guide: Commercial fisheries – costs and earnings

The Commercial fisheries costs and earnings dashboards show various cost items and earnings based on the filter options that you select, as well as trends in costs over time.

All values are shown in Canadian dollars that have been adjusted for inflation. These dashboards presents our analysis of the data. If you would like to perform your own analysis, you can access the raw data here.

For the best experience, make sure that your default web browser settings are set to the language of your choice.

Database options

The Fleet financial – fishery and operation level dashboards show the following cost items and earnings by fishery name or operation name, year, and tier:

The Trends – single cost item and cost items at fishery level dashboards show cost-to-revenue percentages across years.

Use the Filters box

The "Filters box" has the following search options:

To search for options under a fishery name, operation name, or cost item, scroll through the options using the scroll bar.

Select options

All of the “Apply” buttons must be clicked in order for the table and chart to produce the correct results.

To select all options under a fishery name, operation name, year, income tier, or cost item:

  1. Check "Select All"
  2. Click on the "Apply" button

To select only one option under a fishery group, fishery name, species, year, or PFMA:

  1. Uncheck "Select All"
  2. Check the option that you are interested in
  3. Click on the "Apply" button

Find the annual average revenue, fuel cost, payment to crew, gear share to captain, maintenance, insurance, and EBITDA for fisheries or operations within the harvesting sector

Depending on data availability and for privacy reasons, some fisheries and/or operations do not have data for all income tiers.

  1. In the "Filters box", select the options that you are interested in.
    1. Select the fishery name(s) or operation name(s) you are interested in.
    2. Select the year(s) you are interested in. If you select only one year, the table will show the financial metrics for that year. If you select multiple years, the table will show the annual average of each financial metric over the years selected.
    3. Select the income tier you are interested in.
  2. Charts are sorted by default alphabetically by the first column. You can change the chart view by clicking the sort icon in a column to sort the information by greatest to smallest or smallest to greatest.

You cannot generate a chart that covers only one year – the trends dashboard is designed to show all available years.

  1. In the "Filters box", select the options that you are interested in.
    1. Select the cost item(s) you are interested in.
    2. Select the fishery name(s) you are interested in
  2. Hover over a point on the chart to view to view the cost-to-revenue ratio for a particular cost item.
