User guide: tidal water recreational fisheries dashboards

The Tidal water recreational fisheries dashboards show economic analysis information about these fisheries based on filters that you select. All values are shown in Canadian dollars that have been adjusted for inflation.

These dashboards present our analysis of the data. If you would like to perform your own analysis, you can access the raw data here.

For the best experience, make sure that your default web browser settings are set to the language of your choice.

Dashboard options

Use the Filters box

Depending on the dashboard you are interacting with, you may select one or more of the following search options:

All of the “Apply” buttons must be clicked in order for the table and chart to produce the correct results.

To search for options under a fishery group, fishery name, species, year, or PFMA, scroll through the options using the scroll bar.

Select options

To select all options under a filter:

  1. Check "Select All"
  2. Click on the "Apply" button

To select specific options under a filter:

  1. Uncheck "Select All"
  2. Check the option that you are interested in
  3. Click on the "Apply" button

Interact with the results

Tables are sorted by default alphabetically by the first column. You can change the chart view by clicking the sort icon in a column to sort the information by greatest to smallest or smallest to greatest.

To see results displayed in charts, graphs or maps, hover over the data points that you are interested in.

Find the annual average number of fishing days and fishing expenditures for the recreational sector

To find the annual average coastwide and PFMA prices for a given species:

  1. Navigate to the Tidal fast facts – annual averages dashboard.
  2. In the "Filters box", select the options that you are interested in.
  3. Scroll down to the first table, which will show the following annual averages for the species
    • number of fishing days
    • direct fishing expenditures
    • expenditures on fishing packages
    • major purchases and investments
    • total expenditures by species

Charts are sorted by default alphabetically by the first column. You can change the chart view by clicking the sort icon in a column to sort the information by greatest to smallest or smallest to greatest.

To find the annual average number of fishing days and expenditure for a given species:

  1. Navigate to the Tidal charts dashboard.
  2. In the "Filters box", select the options that you are interested in.
  3. If you want to see the annual average number of fishing days and expenditures broken down by month, scroll down to the first chart.
    • Hover over a bar (or data point) on the chart to view to view the annual average number of fishing days (or annual average total expenditure) for a particular month.
  4. If you want to see the annual average number of fishing days and expenditures broken down by species, scroll down to the second chart.
    • Hover over a data point on the chart to view to view the annual average number of fishing days or annual average total expenditure for a particular species.
    • If you want to focus on one species only, but still see it in context with the other species, you can select multiple species names in the filters box and then select one species only in the legend below the chart.

Display a heat map of the annual average number of fishing days and annual average total expenditures for the recreational sector

  1. Navigate to the Tidal maps dashboard.
  2. In the "Filters box", select the options that you are interested in.
  3. If you want to see the annual average number of fishing days broken down by PFMA, scroll down to the first map.
    • Hover over an area on the map to view to view the annual average number of fishing days for a particular PFMA.
  4. If you want to see the annual average total expenditures broken down by PFMA, scroll down to the second map.
    • Hover over an area on the map to view to view the annual average total expenditures for a particular PFMA.
  5. If you want to focus on a particular range of fishing days or expenditures, you can select your desired range in the legend below the maps.
  6. The number of fishing days have been calculated in ranges of more than 51 to 5,000, 5,001 to 20,000, 20,001 to 40,000, 40,001 to 60,000, and 60,001 to 136,724. No PFMAs report fewer than 6 or more than 136,724 days.
    • To see calculations of how many PFMAs fall within each of these fishing day ranges, click on the “Average number…” button in the top right hand corner of the map. This will open up a panel showing the count by range.

To find the annual average number of fishing days and expenditure for a given species:

  1. Navigate to the Tidal annual trends dashboard.
  2. In the "Filters box", select the options that you are interested in.
  3. You cannot generate a chart that covers only one year – the trends dashboard is designed to show all available years.
  4. Hover over a bar on the first chart to view to view the number of fishing days for a particular year. Hover over a bar on the second chart to view to view the total fishing expenditures for a particular year.
