Pacific salmon and enforcement

Supporting sustainable fisheries through enforcement and community awareness

Our Conservation and Protection branch plays a critical role in supporting our management for the sustainable use and future viability of BC’s salmon populations. One of the keys to protection of the stocks is effective enforcement and fishery officers are on the front lines promoting compliance, building awareness and enforcing the rules and regulations under several Federal Acts. Illegal fishing activities threaten the future of all fish stocks, including salmon, and can affect the viability of coastal communities, access for commercial and recreational fisheries, the rights and title of First Nations and have an impact on Canada’s internal obligations. Using a risk-based approach, we deploy fishery officers around British Columbia, where necessary, to respond to priority issues using a variety of methods, including aerial, ocean, river, on-the-ground, night and undercover patrols, while also pursuing complex and large investigations.
