About us

Built in 1989, the Horsefly River Spawning Channel was originally built to produce sockeye salmon for fisheries, but now focuses on the conservation of the Horsefly River sockeye stock. The spawning channel rears sockeye salmon exclusively, with adult returns ranging from 5,000 to one million depending on the year. The channel’s capacity is about 23,000 adults. There is a walking trail adjacent to the spawning channel that is open to the public. The spawning channel is the annual site for the local salmon festival.

Visiting

For the health and safety of our visitors and staff, public washrooms are currently closed.

Directions

Heading north, turn east off highway 97 at 150 Mile House and follow the signs to the town of Horsefly. Once in Horsefly, turn right at Gasser’s Corner Store and cross the bridge over the Horsefly River. The visitors' parking lot is 200 metres from the bridge on the right.

Visitors can expect to see spawning sockeye in September. The site has limited signage and there are no public facilities available. There is a campsite equipped with outhouses near the channel that visitors can use.
