PICFI is a new initiative aimed at achieving environmentally
sustainable and economically viable commercial fisheries, where
conservation is the first priority and First Nations’ aspirations to be
more involved are supported.
The Government of Canada has committed $175 million over five years to implement the initiative. PICFI builds on fisheries reform work begun in response to the 2004 reports of the First Nations Panel on Fisheries and the Joint Task Group on Post-treaty Fisheries, as well as subsequent discussions in a wide variety of forums that have confirmed the need for PICFI.
