In-season, information from test fisheries, and commercial, First Nations and recreational fisheries are used by fisheries managers to estimate actual abundance and timing of various stocks.

An orange flag indicates a commercial or recreational fishing vessel is
under contract by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to conduct a test fishery
for research purposes.
First Nations may also operate test fisheries, authorized by the
Department, using both small vessels and commercial-style vessels.
Recreational boaters should remain alert in order to avoid collision
with nets.
