Juan de Fuca Model

Welcome to the operational model page for southwest British Columbia. Please select your region of interest from the site map below. Note that 48 hour current animations are now available for Victoria and western Juan de Fuca Strait indicated by the red boxes.

This page works best with Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 6.

JDF POM model description

The numerical model used in the simulations is called the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), named after the group who developed it. It is fully 3D, solving the full equations for a fluid, and for this reason is called a primitive equation model (as opposed to models which make simplifying assumptions). Additionally, it has a free surface and solves for the evolution of underlying physical parameters (Temperature and Salinity).

The POM model's vertical coordinate follows the underlying bathymetry (called a sigma-coordinate), making it ideal for the study of regions with multiply connected domains and rapid changes of depth. With the free surface, the model can also correctly handle river input and estuarine circulation. Tidal flow is also well dealt with, though it is necessary to model the full Georgia Strait region in this case to get proper response.

Wind stresses and surface heat flux input are also allowed (but not implemented in the current version of the operational model), yielding a practical test bed for the testing of theories and used here as a prognostic tool.

In the future, 24 hourly wind stress and surface heat flux predictions will be obtained from an atmospheric model and river input will be obtained by near real-time flow available on the internet.

For a more complete description of the model project you can downl the project documentation (PDF file 4.9MB) or zip format (1.8MB).
