Community Advisor - Northern Vancouver Island And Surrounding Mainland Inlets

Photo of Pat Schulz"The North Island stewardship groups are again showing the way with projects such as the new Quatse Hatchery Interpretive Centre. Built in 2008/09 by the Northern Vancouver Island Salmon Enhancement Association, it has research labs, a community classroom and a salmon interpretive centre. Be sure to visit it on your next trip to Port Hardy. The high level of dedication is also apparent within all the salmon enhancement groups, be it locally or at more remote sites such as Scott Cove or Warner Bay. North Island also sustains a high degree of marine mammal monitoring and offers public education through stewardship programs. Every year the North Island education coordinator Jackie Hildering delivers an incredible aquatic education program to many local schools. Some of her subjects, based on the Stream to Sea program, include Salmonids in the Classroom, Junior Beach Studies, Marine Mammal Science, "The Cost of Cool", and many more. See the list of stewardship groups in your area; join one of them or start your own. Make a difference; be involved in your community. To all volunteers I wish continued success."
