Kitimat was one of the
first "planned" communities in North America. The prosperous town and
the world's largest aluminum smelter were built at the head of the
Douglas Channel in the 1950's. The 130 nautical mile salt-water Douglas
Channel connects Kitimat to the Pacific Ocean. Kitimat is a hub for
industry, a sports-man's paradise, and a wilderness playground. But there
are many things that you must look out for when venturing in the area.
There are many dangers that you may encounter. There are many bears in
and around town. There are also many moose and deer, they may look
harmless but they can become quite
dangerous. All wildlife must be respected, since it is their homes we
are encroaching on.
