Derelict Vessel Mitigation and Gear Disposal Program

Through the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI), the Derelict Vessel Mitigation and Gear Disposal Program (Vessel and Gear Disposal Program) gives fishers who have retired their commercial salmon licence eligibilities through the Pacific Salmon Commercial Licence Retirement Program the opportunity to dispose of their fishing vessels and/or gear in an environmentally friendly manner.

The Pacific Salmon Commercial Licence Retirement Program is a voluntary program that allows commercial salmon licence eligibility holders to retire their licence eligibilities permanently for market value through reverse auction, and will facilitate the transition to a smaller commercial harvesting sector.

In order to reduce the impacts of a potential increase in abandoned derelict vessels and gear generated by fishers who have participated in the Licence Retirement Program, we will work with designated Harbour Authorities who will accept retired vessels and/or gear to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner.

Program eligibility

Only vessel owners who have retired their licence through the Pacific Salmon Commercial Licence Retirement Program will be eligible for the Vessel and Gear Disposal Program.
