Hatcheries and spawning channels

Salmon hatcheries play a key role in our efforts to conserve vulnerable salmon stocks; provide recreational, commercial and Indigenous fishing opportunities; and support stock assessment. Spawning channels provide high-quality habitat for adult salmon to lay their eggs and for eggs to incubate. Our hatcheries and spawning channels release close to 400 million juvenile salmon every year to support wild stocks and sustain Pacific salmon fisheries.

We operate 23 hatcheries and spawning channels and support Indigenous and community–based hatcheries through our Community Economic Development and Public Involvement Programs. These enhancement efforts are coordinated to support the conservation, rebuilding and management of salmon stocks in rivers and streams throughout BC and the Yukon.
